A candy hunt that’s fiendishly fun!

4 steps and you're good to go!

15 days before hunt day: choose your theme and concept.

  • What mission will you give the kids? Will they have to find the candy stolen by the ghost? Find all the ingredients for a magic potion? Visit a haunted dollhouse? Once you find your theme and concept, you’ll be able to structure the game and decide on the clues that lead to the candies!
  • Speaking of clues, how will the kids get them? You could have little tests they have to solve to find the clues, like solve riddles, play charades, draw pictures, trace their way out of a labyrinth… The possibilities are endless.

10 days before hunt day: set up the candy hunt.

  • Determine the number of stages of the hunt. Once you’ve done that you can choose the final challenges, then create a scenario and write out the clues.
  • Find the hiding places and decide on the order in which they’ll be found. At each hiding spot, you’ll have to hide the candy and the description of the test they’ll have to take to find the next clue.

Keep the game to an appropriate length. Depending on the age of the kids, the game itself and the types of tests, 6 to 8 steps should be plenty.

7 days before hunt day: get your material together

  • Stock up on sweets and get the bags or boxes you’ll hide them in.
  • Write the clues and test instructions on craft paper. You’ll also want to gather all the accessories the kids will need for the game: costumes for mimes, music for dancing, pencils for drawings or labyrinths, etc.
  • Choose the grand prize for the hunt. A prize assortment of sweets, a personalized gift, a magic accessory, a certificate for each of the participants… Let your imagination run free!

Remember to keep everything hidden so you don’t spoil the surprise!

Candy hunt day: set everything up.

  • Hint at the theme of the hunt throughout the day by alluding to certain elements of the story you’ve created.
  • Hide the candy carefully, even if it means asking another member of the family to create a diversion. It's best to wait a few hours before the hunt begins to avoid having any of the hiding places discovered beforehand—especially if part of the hunt is outside, where four-legged intruders may also be looking for sweet treats...

Just before starting the hunt, adjust the lighting, create the right audio environment and have all your extra accessories on hand. Then let the hunt begin!
