The rabies virus is transmitted to humans through the saliva of an infected animal following a bite or scratch. Bites on the head, neck and arms are the most likely to spread rabies. When transmitted, this serious infection can cause brain damage and lead to death. Wild animals are the most likely to harbour the virus, but pets can also contract it if they were not vaccinated by a veterinarian. In humans, the only preventive treatment against rabies remains vaccination.
A nurse or pharmacist are available to administer the vaccine directly at the pharmacy.
