Prescribe medication for certain specific situations

What it means for you—In some situations, your pharmacist can prescribe medication when a diagnosis is not required, for example, to prevent certain health problems.

How it works

  • The pharmacist will meet with you to assess your needs and determine if you have risk factors.
  • Following this consultation, your pharmacist will decide whether or not to prescribe medication.
  • The pharmacist will document the decision.

If the pharmacist decides to prescribe medication

He/she will

  • prepare a prescription.
  • inform your treating physician (if necessary)
  • do a follow-up with you (if necessary).

If the pharmacist decides not to prescribe medication

  • He/she can recommend alternatives and/or direct you to the appropriate resource.
