SUN SAFETY TIPS

Why do I need sunscreen every day?

Why do I need sunscreen every day?

  • Sunscreen is needed every day – the sun emits UV rays all year round, even on cloudy or cold days, and can penetrate most windows, clouds, fog and haze.
  • Sunscreens reduce the amount of ultraviolet radiation absorbed by the skin, which helps to prevent sunburns and decreases the risk of other UV-induced changes in the skin (such as photoaging) and most importantly, skin cancer.
  • Sunlight consists of two types of harmful rays that reach the earth – UVA and UVB rays. Overexposure to either can potentially lead to skin cancer, including melanoma. UVB rays are the primary cause of sunburns. UVA rays can penetrate deep into the skin, causing premature aging, wrinkles and dark spots.
How to apply sunscreen?

How to apply sunscreen?

  • Use sunscreens that have a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher.
  • Choose a sunscreen that is labelled broad spectrum to protect you from both UVA and UVB rays.• Look for sunscreens that are water-resistant.
  • Be sure to read the expiration date on the bottle. In general, sunscreen effectiveness can degrade over time, especially if exposed to high temperatures for extended periods.
  • Sunscreen should be used every day on exposed skin not covered by protective clothing.
  • Apply a generous amount of sunscreen 15 minutes before exposure to give your skin time to absorb the product.
  • Health Canada recommends reapplying sunscreen every two hours. Also reapply immediately after swimming, towelling off or sweating.
