The art of taking beautiful pictures outdoors

The first picnic of summer, the strawberries-picking getaway, the children playing in the sand, the view from a mountain summit – all are well worth a photograph!

Want to be proud to show your landscape pictures to your parents and friends? The tips cited below will allow you to take truly unforgettable pictures.

So pick up your digital camera, start experimenting and create masterpieces!

Level with your subject

Eye contact is important. When taking someone’s picture, ensure that your digital camera is leveled with the subject’s eyes. To photograph a child you will need to kneel to see the world from his perspective. The same reasoning applies for all subjects: pets, friends during a party, people at a wedding.

Get up close to the subject

If the subject is small in the viewfinder, get closer and zoom in. Your subject should occupy the main surface of the photo, in the aimer, whether this subject is a person, an object or a landscape.

Ensure that the subject is off center

The center of the picture is not the ideal spot for the subject. Breathe life into your photos by moving the subject off center.

For a landscape more particularly, strive to create a unique perspective.

Use a simple background

A vague and indistinct background brings out the subject. On the contrary, a background that catches the eye will often cause problems as the background objects will clash with the main subject.

Keep in mind the following question: what are you looking to highlight?

Use a flash indoors and outdoors

You are well aware of the importance of the flash to take indoor pictures. But to eliminate shadows on faces or for special scenes, use a flash outdoors as well, even when it is sunny. The flash is a tool often overlooked by non-professional photographers. It lets you decrease excessive contrasts between sun-drenched zones and shaded areas in the same photo.

Pay special attention to lighting

Especially when taking pictures of a landscape, it is preferable, where possible, to be out in the morning or in the evening, when the sunlight is charged with orange shades.

Take a lot of pictures and print them

Take a lot of pictures to increase the chances that you will capture that very special photograph. Do not hesitate to experiment with angles and light.

Don’t forget that the only way to be certain that your precious memories won’t be lost is to print your pictures, since electronic media have an uncertain shelf life. Keep your photos from one generation to the next...
