Men's health: investing in your health capital

Gentlemen, make your health a priority in order to enjoy life to the fullest and for as long as possible. This will maximize your energy level.

Staying healthy: it's all about willpower

At times, some men may tend to take their health for granted and trivialize their concerns or those of their loved ones in this regard.

If you are a man, here are some questions you should ask yourself:

  • Do you often eat prepared, fast food and processed foods? Are vegetables and whole grains almost non-existent in your daily menu?
  • Do you get at least 150 minutes of exercise per week?
  • Do you suffer from insomnia or stress?
  • Do you drink alcohol regularly, and in larger amounts than recommended?
  • Do you smoke?
  • Do you only see your doctor if you have a serious health problem?
  • Do you tend not to follow all of your doctor's or pharmacist's recommendations, including your medications and health follow-ups?

If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, it's never too late to turn things around and set a course for better health.

Staying healthy starts with wanting to be healthy, and then putting some things in place to achieve that goal.

Four health problems to watch for in men

When it comes to men's health, there are certain issues that are particularly important to watch out for. The good news, however, is that prevention and healthy living are your best allies in keeping them at bay.

Cardiovascular diseases

Addressing cardiovascular disease prevention is a good start for lowering mortality risks in men. These are the most common and deadly health problems in Canada. Men often suffer from it at a younger age than women.

In order to lower their cardiovascular risk, men can benefit from making certain changes to adopt a healthy lifestyle. For more information on this critical health issue, you can read the following texts:

Erectile dysfunction

It is estimated that after the age of 40, approximately one in three men experience erectile difficulties. Sometimes, such a problem can be explained by so-called organic causes, such as an illness or use of certain medications. It can also be explained by psychological causes, such as fatigue, stress, performance anxiety or psychological trauma.

It is not uncommon for erectile dysfunction to be the result of a combination of factors. Fortunately, there are solutions! Just talk to a doctor and your pharmacist, who can suggest solutions.

For more information about erectile dysfunction, read the text entitled Solutions to erectile dysfunction.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia

As men age, many are affected by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). This condition is caused by the normal aging process. Symptoms of BPH rarely appear before the age of 40, reaching nearly 50% of men aged 60 and 80% of those aged 80 and over.

The most common manifestation is having difficulty urinating. Other symptoms may include the sensation that the bladder is not completely empty after urinating, the need to strain to urinate and a weak urine stream. If you experience symptoms related to your ability to urinate, discuss them with your doctor or pharmacist. For more information on this topic, read the text on Benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Prostate cancer

The earlier prostate cancer is detected, the better the response to treatment, which increases the likelihood of a cure. It is possible to make certain lifestyle changes to reduce the risk of developing cancer. Visit your doctor regularly to discuss your risk of prostate cancer and screening and prevention measures.

For more information on this disease, read the following texts: Five good habits to prevent prostate cancer and Early detection of prostate cancer.

If you have any questions about health and medication, your pharmacist is always there to help you. Don't hesitate to consult them!
