How do whitening treatments work?

Most teeth whitening products include carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide, which break down the darker molecules located in the enamel or dentin, resulting in whiter teeth.

What results can I expect?

Given that the natural colour of everyone’s teeth varies, we shouldn’t all expect to get bright white teeth. You should also know that the whitening product only works on the teeth’s natural enamel and not on composite fillings or crowns. You might need to get new ones to harmonize the colour of your smile. The effect of a whitening product can last from one to six months, according to your lifestyle habits.

Why choose whitening strips?

Whitening strips are the over-the-counter whitening treatments most recommended by dentists. Easy to apply, they are especially efficient when the teeth are straight. Crooked teeth, however, might be difficult to cover and whiten.

In comparison, treatments that require brushes, mouthwashes and toothpaste contain an insufficient amount of peroxide and their exposure time is too short to provide visible, satisfactory effects.

How do I use them?

All you need to do is apply the whitening strip to your teeth by firmly pressing on it so that the gel covers the entire surface of the tooth. Then simply leave it in place for 30 minutes. Repeat the process once or twice a day for 7 to 14 days, according to your teeth’s colour and the results you want.

Are there any side effects to using whitening strips?

Health Canada states that there are no risks to using at-home teeth whitening treatments if you follow the product’s directions. However, they can irritate your gums and increase the teeth’s sensitivity to hot or cold. In general, the side effects only last a few days.

What if the sensitivity persists? Reduce the product’s application by half or stop using it for two or three days. Consult a dentist if the pain returns when you resume treatment.

Are there any contraindications?

Teeth whitening products should not be used by women who are pregnant, women who are nursing, patients under 12 and in cases of gum or mouth disease. Smokers should not use teeth whitening products either because carbamide peroxide interacts with nicotine, which can increase the cigarette’s carcinogenic effects. Want to quit for good? What foods should I avoid during and after a whitening treatment?

To maximize the strips’ whitening effects, you should avoid consuming foods and beverages than stain and tend to yellow teeth (wine, coffee, beets, chocolate, curry, etc.), as well as very acidic foods and beverages (sodas, citrus) that can affect the tooth’s enamel.
