Three Looks for the Holidays

This holiday season, play around with different looks—opt for vintage, chic or festive. Makeup tips.

Retro: doe eyes and bare lips

For a vintage look, apply a light foundation and a dash of bronzing powder to your cheek bones, forehead, nose and chin. Next, highlight your eyes and give them a 60s-style almond shape. First apply an eyelid base, followed by a neutral shade of eyeshadow and finish with black eyeliner on your upper lid. Pencil, pen, liquid, gel or cream eyeliner will all do the trick. For the perfect contour, keep your eye half-closed and start thin at the inner corner, making the line thicker as you approach the outer corner where you finish off with a quick upward stroke. To make your eyes look bigger, apply several layers of black mascara to the eyelashes on your upper lids only. For the finishing touch, apply a matte or a light pink glossy lipstick.

Go chic: smokey eyes and ruby red lips

The smokey eye look is another great way to make your eyes stand out. The idea is to create a halo around your eyes using dark eyeshadow or an ombre eye shadow palette (like the one made by Clarins). However, your complexion has to be flawless, your eyebrows perfectly drawn and any under-eye circles camouflaged. While dark eyeshadow works with almost any eye colour (except very dark eyes), the smoky eye look can also be achieved using brown, grey, navy blue, green, purple and plum hues. First apply the eyeshadow from the inner to the outer corner of your upper eyelid using a flat brush, then blend it upwards beyond your eyelid and downwards over your lower eyelashes. Finish with a thin application of black mascara on both your upper and lower lashes and go for some late-night smoldering red lipstick.

Festive looks: makeup that sparkles

For a festive New Year's look, opt for silver, gold or bronze tones when choosing mascaras, eyeliners, pencils, eye shadows, lipsticks or nail polish. You can even highlight your hair, face and neckline with a hint of loose powder (Lise Watier)! Highlight your eyes with one or two pearlescent shades and colour your lips with iridescent red for a chic effect, though bear in mind this look is best suited for evenings.
