Skin aging: beware of blue light!

UV rays, pollution, stress, fatigue… our skin has it tough and digital screens are only making things worse by exposing us to more blue light than ever before. What are its effects? How can we protect ourselves? We've got the answers.

WHAT IS BLUE LIGHT?

In its natural form, blue light is part of the visible spectrum of light within our atmosphere. A synthetic form of blue light is created primarily by LED lights and electronic screens. Prolonged exposure to these short rays, which vibrate or twinkle intensely, can cause problems: visual fatigue, headaches, disturbed sleep cycle... and damage to the skin.

BLUE LIGHT

HOW DOES IT DAMAGE THE SKIN?

Blue light accelerates aging of the skin through the process of oxidation, which destroys our skin-cell membranes and impedes their proper functioning. In that more fragile state, our skin is less able to repair itself and the fibres lose their elasticity. The result? Wrinkles and lines start appearing. Recent studies have even drawn a link between exposure to blue light and pigment stains on the skin. It's time for us to start taking proper care of our skin!

SOS: SAVE OUR SKIN!

In contrast to that of UV rays, the effects of blue light aren't immediately apparent. They appear gradually over time with every additional minute of exposure. So, prevention is crucial. Even if you can't feel or see the effects of blue light right away, you have to start protecting yourself today.

How? Start by putting down your smart phone or tablet, and turning off your TV and computer screens as often as you can. Did you know that most of us spend at least 6 hours a day in front of a screen?! It's taking its toll on your skin. You can also reduce the brightness on your screens to cut back on exposure to blue light. And don't forget to complement those measures with specially adapted skincare routines.

SOS: SAVE OUR SKIN!

Today, there are more products than ever created specifically to counter the effects of blue light. Their formulas are rich in antioxidants (vitamins C and E, nut extracts, so-called Dragon's Blood, etc.) to help reduce damage to our skin cells. Some multi-purpose products can also reflect blue light away, create a shield against pollution and UV rays and correct the signs of aging: a nice add to your skincare routine – that can be complemented by brightening and plumping formulas for an intensive cure!
