Seeing ruby lips on the catwalks means you’ll be seeing them everywhere this season. Matte, satin or sheer, we’ve got great products and professional tips to help you make the most of this trend.
Wondering if fiery red lips are for you? Makeup artists all agree that bright reds work for everyone! Jean Coutu’s beauty guru Virginie Vandelac says nothing brightens up the face better. “Some reds are almost universal but there’s also a nuanced shade for every woman. More pink, more bluish, more orange… so long as it suits your complexion. It’s all about finding the shade that’s just right for you.”
If your complexion has a cool tone (the veins of your wrists are bluish), wear shades with pink or purple: raspberry, wine or carmine red. If your complexion is warm (in this case, your veins will look a bit green), wear shades with an orange tint, like brick-red or Bordeaux.
For a flawless result, a fiery mouth requires precision and some dexterity. The trick is to draw the outline of the lips starting from the outer corners towards the center and not the other way around. "If your lips are very thin, you can cheat by drawing just outside the edge, to exaggerate the natural curve," says Virginie. “Then, pencil in your lips and blend the colour with the spatula tip (or brush) of the pencil. It’s perfect for a matte finish and a second-skin look. If you want to change the texture, just apply a layer of a satin lipstick or gloss.”
Not sure you dare to wear red? Start with a softer look by taming the intensity: take a small amount of colour from the tube with your finger and lightly tap it onto your lips. Or, follow Virginie's tip: "Use a long-haired eye shadow brush to apply the colour to create a soft shade. The colour will be sheer and very natural, as if you had just nibbled your lips. It’s right on trend!”
If you want a look that’s opaque and matte, make sure your lip pencil is the same shade as your lipstick. An outline that’s darker will make your mouth look smaller. If you want a softer, more transparent look, use a transparent or flesh-coloured lip pencil to create an invisible barrier that stops lipstick bleeds.
This brightly-coloured look requires flawless lips. Are yours chapped? Exfoliate them with a gentle facial scrub and warm water and then moisturize them overnight. If you don’t want to retouch your makeup after every sip of coffee, put on a primer first. This special base smoothes the skin and holds the colour for a long time. For ultimate enduring power, use a waterproof pencil and a long-lasting lipstick.
