Men: the 10 commandments of hair removal

Men are increasingly getting rid of their unwanted body hair, and waxing is their weapon of choice. Fellas, here are 10 rules to follow!

1

DON’T FORGET TO PROPERLY PREPARE YOUR SKIN BEFORE WAXING.

The preparation step is essential if you want to remove your hair effectively and with less pain. It mostly consists of cleansing and exfoliating the areas to be treated. This will allow you to remove impurities and dead cells from the skin, which will help you avoid ingrown hairs (those infamous hairs that grow under the skin). As all residues will be removed from the hairs, the wax will have an easier time gripping them, making the hair removal process less painful.

2

DON’T OVER-WAX YOUR EYEBROWS.

Waxing your eyebrows is a delicate manoeuvre. Follow these three rules to avoid making an irreparable mistake:

  • So long unibrow: wax the central area between the two brows. Where should you stop? Trace an imaginary line from the corner of the eye, and remove only the hairs that go beyond it.
  • Always wax the bottom of the brow (never touch the upper part!) by removing only the hairs that are too close to the eyelid.
  • Cut away any hairs that go beyond this, using small scissors.

3

NEVER USE A DEPILATORY CREAM WITHOUT FIRST TESTING IT.

When using a cream for the first time—regardless of the brand or where you’ll be using it—start by testing it on a small area of the skin. If you have an allergic reaction (redness or irritations), you should change the product; opt instead for a cream that is formulated for sensitive skin.

4

CHECK THE TEMPERATURE OF THE WAX BEFORE APPLYING IT.

If the wax is too hot, you can seriously burn yourself, but if the wax is not hot enough, it will stick and be difficult to apply. So before getting started, first check that the wax is at the right temperature by applying a small quantity to the back of your hand.

5

MOISTURIZE THE SKIN AFTER WAXING, NOT BEFORE.

Whether removing hair with a razor, cold wax, hot wax or depilatory cream, epilation aggravates the skin and makes it ultra-sensitive. To soothe your skin, cool it down by applying cold water compresses to treated areas. You’ll feel immediate relief! And don’t forget to moisturize your skin directly after (and between) epilations, which will allow the hairs to grow in properly without ingrown hairs.

Why not moisturize before waxing? Because the cream’s oily texture will prevent the wax from properly adhering to the skin.

6

DON’T WAX ON THE SAME DAY AS AN IMPORTANT EVENT.

Wedding, interview, beach party—a good general rule is to never wax on the same day as a special event you’ll be attending because your skin will be red and irritated. Allow your skin two days to return to its usual appearance.

7

AVOID SUN EXPOSURE AFTER WAXING.

Hair removal weakens the skin and UV rays can have a much more harmful effect on sensitive skin (and its pores) that has just been waxed. So if you don’t want your skin to be susceptible to sunburns, allergies and pink spots, avoid going into the sun for 24 hours following waxing. If you absolutely must go into the sun, make sure you protect the treated areas with sunscreen.

8

DON’T USE SCRUBS OR FRAGRANCES AFTER WAXING.

At the risk of repeating ourselves, be careful with weakened skin after waxing. To avoid aggravating it further, avoid using scrubs or products containing alcohol, such as fragrances.

9

DON’T WAIT TOO LONG BEFORE WAXING AGAIN.

The longer and thicker the hair, the more pain you’ll feel when removing it. If you wait too long between waxing sessions, you risk breaking the hair rather than plucking it out at the root. The result: your hair will grow back quicker. Remove the hair as soon as it is long enough to do so.

10

DON’T SHAVE BETWEEN WAXING SESSIONS.

Waxing thins the hair follicles and makes them easier to remove. Conversely, shaving makes the new hair rougher, which can make it more painful to remove the next time you wax. What’s more, shaving weakens the hair and makes it brittle, which can result in swollen and infected pores.
