Your guide to the “no makeup” look

After nude comes “no makeup.” That’s right! This look uses colour transparency and it’s all the rage with stars like Adele, Alicia Keys and Lily Collins. Should you try it? The answer is yes if you want to show your true beauty while still enjoying a radiant complexion. The golden rule: less is more!

Virginie Vandelac, Jean Coutu’s makeup artist and beauty expert, explains how to get this look in a few easy steps.

1

Moisturize your skin

We can’t say it enough: hydration is the key to flawless makeup, whether you want extravagant or natural results. Not only will you look more radiant, but well-moisturized skin allows the makeup to properly hold and last longer. For a “no makeup” look, you need to even out your complexion, without covering it up.

Virginie’s tip

To maintain your skin’s natural appearance, mix a bit of moisturizer (or serum) with your foundation and concealer. This transparent blend will smoothen your skin while hiding imperfections.

2

Give yourself a healthy glow

The goal here is to get a soft, natural look. You want to enhance your complexion and delicately shape your face.

Virginie’s tip

Get a smooth, velvety look by applying a bronzing powder with a very wide brush to sculpt and structure your face. Apply the powder with light touches to the top of the forehead and hollow of the cheeks, then spread the leftover powder in the brush over the centre of the face. And there you have it!

3

Powder your cheeks

Rosy cheeks are the key to a healthy glow. For a flawless “no makeup” look, opt for a blush that matches your natural skin tone. Make sure it’s not too pigmented, but just rosy enough to make you look radiant.

Virginie’s tip

Since transparency is essential for ultra-natural makeup, mix your blush with a bit of moisturizing balm and apply it with a sponge making small patting motions.

4

Do your lashes

For your eyes, say goodbye to eyeliner and eye shadow. Opt instead for a subtle look by applying lash makeup only. Use a mascara that lengthens rather than adds volume.

Virginie’s tip

Want to lengthen and define your lashes? It’s easy. Apply the mascara with the brush from the root of the lash all the way to the tip. Have very flat lashes? Don’t fret! Heat up an eyelash curler for a few minutes with your blow dryer, then curl your lashes and apply your mascara. Hello doe eyes!

5

Perfect your lips

Once again, transparency is the magic word. Keep your lips looking natural with a neutral colour that highlights your complexion. It’s best to choose a plumping lip product to fill in wrinkles and make your lips look soft, smooth and healthy.

Virginie’s tip

Your lips get used a lot. You use them to talk, eat, kiss, etc., so it’s important to take care of them! For a treatment that gives excellent results, mix a serum with a concealer and apply it on and around your lips with a brush, from top to bottom, then left to right. Not only will this beauty trick fill in wrinkles and brighten up your smile—it will stop your lipstick from running and keep it looking great all day long! Not bad, eh?
