A large percentage of adults, and an even greater number of children, suffer from eczema, a condition that is synonymous with inflammation and itching. Here are some dermo-cosmetic routines that can relieve your symptoms.

What is eczema?

Eczema is one of the most common types of skin disorders.  Characterized by a non-contagious inflammation of the epidermis (the outer layer of skin), it manifests itself in a number of ways and affects both the immune system and skin cells.

What causes eczema?

While people with chronic dry skin may develop eczema, there is no causal link between the two. The disease seems to be of a genetic nature. However, certain conditions can provoke its appearance. People with eczema are often sensitive to irritants like animal fur, dust, secondary smoke, soaps and chemical products. Some environmental factors can also provoke or aggravate eczema, like wind, extreme heat or cold, pollution, etc.

What are the symptoms?

Irritation, dryness, redness and scaly, patchy sores are among the most frequent symptoms. During a flare-up, certain areas of the body, like the hands, ankles, elbows and knees, become covered in itchy patches and squamous scabs. Some people may also experience blister-like bubbles. Over time, the affected area becomes thicker and dryer and can change in colour.

How can the symptoms be relieved?

There is no miracle cure to get rid of eczema. That being said, you can relieve your symptoms by using specially formulated products created for the whole family. Remember that you should always consult a dermatologist if the flare-up is severe or if your skin reacts poorly to treatments.

Trade in your soap for a cleansing oil

Facial or body soaps are too irritating for skin affected by eczema. Instead, rely on emollient cleansing oils that are gentle.

Make thermal water your best friend

Rich in minerals and trace elements, thermal water is renowned for its gentle, soothing properties. It also calms inflamed skin and provides lasting protection—two vital benefits during an outbreak of eczema. To relieve itching and irritation, pour some onto a clean washcloth and dab it onto the affected areas for about 15 minutes. It can also be sprayed directly onto skin after applying a moisturizing cream or balm, that way it will trap the active ingredients inside the epidermal layer and prevent moisture from escaping too quickly.

Use a cream formulated especially for eczema-prone skins instead of a light lotion

Emollients are an essential part of a skin-care routine for people with atopic dermatitis. They can limit the impact of irritants and allergens, make your skin feels more comfortable and can even prevent your eczema from flaring up. Stock up on moisturizing balms and apply them on damp skin after your bath or shower. Make sure you use pH-balanced, perfume-free formulas.

A few extra tips

  • After you bathe or shower, dry your skin with a soft towel by dabbing it gently; avoid rubbing or scrubbing your body with the towel!
  • Try your best to avoid scratching the affected areas and consider wearing gloves to bed.
  • Take the necessary steps to prevent flare-ups: maximize your protection against UV rays and other environmental aggressions, reduce stress in your life, quit smoking, etc.
