How can I take care of sensitive or intolerant skin?

Your questions… and our answers!

Does your skin redden, tighten or get warm the moment the weather changes? Is it sensitive to wind, dust and the sun? Do you have to be really careful about the skin-care products you use? Want to know which products won’t irritate your skin?

On April 4, 2019, Jean Coutu’s Instagram community had the opportunity to interview a top cosmetician on the subject. Here are some of the questions asked and the recommendations provided by our expert!

1

I have sensitive skin that’s prone to dryness. What type of product do you recommend?

Dry skin doesn’t produce enough sebum, your body’s natural oil. To help your dry skin, choose nourishing products that provide plenty of lipids to make your skin supple and comfortable.  Scan the labels for vegetable oils like shea butter, sunflower extracts, coconut oil, etc. or fatty acids like glycerides and ceramides.

For sensitive skin, choose alcohol- and perfume-free minimalist formulas. A product with fewer ingredients reduces the risk of unwanted reactions. Calming and protective ingredients, like thermal water, are also very helpful.

Our suggestion: La Roche-Posay’s new cream, Toleriane Sensitive Riche. It not only nourishes and soothes your skin for 48 hours, it also gradually reduces your skin’s sensitivity if used regularly.

Is there a suitable product for sensitive skin that can also reduce acne in the T-zone?

For this targeted problem, it’s best to use a gentle skin-care product designed for combination or oily skin. Make sure it contains mattifying agents that can absorb sebum, antiseptic ingredients to prevent pimples and active moisturizing ingredients to prevent your skin from drying out, which also prevents the production of more sebum to compensate for dryness!

Our suggestion:  Bioderma’s Sébium Mat Control not only makes your skin smoother, quenches it and controls its shine all day long, it also acts long-term to make it healthier and less oily.

My skin is both sensitive and oily, and I find it difficult to find a foundation that hides imperfections without my skin feeling irritated or suffocated. Do you have any suggestions?

The best solution is a multifunctional product, which unifies your complexion while minimizing shine and preventing the appearance of imperfections. Active ingredients like zinc, salicylic acid and linoleic acid can be great allies: they control the production of sebum, prevent it from accumulating around the hair, and free your pores of dead cells.

Our suggestion:  La Roche-Posay’s Effaclar Duo + unifying tinted care. Its fluid formula hides imperfections for up to 24 hours and its active anti-inflammatory ingredients prevent the proliferation of bacteria and reduce redness caused by inflammation.

Which eye contour cream is best for sensitive skin?

The skin around the eyes is very delicate, so it’s best to choose a product that’s created specifically for this area and formulated to reduce redness, irritation and tightness.

Our suggestion: Avène's Soothing Eye Contour Treatment. It gently drains and moisturizes the eye contour while effectively relieving sensitive eyelids.

My skin can’t tolerate exfoliation but it really needs it. What do you recommend?

Sensitive skin doesn’t get along well with very abrasive formulas but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a suitable exfoliant out there! There are peels that gently dissolve dead cells and even some exfoliating formulas made specifically to protect sensitive skin.

Our suggestion:  The gentle, purifying exfoliation scrub from Jouviance. The natural micro-pearls of bamboo and olive stones exfoliate the skin without irritating it, while the shea butter keeps it hydrated. The result is an invigorated complexion!
