Why use algae in cosmetics? First, this green gold (rich in nutrients and minerals) has broad similarities with the cells of the epidermis. Second, algae has been around for thousands of years and in that time has proven its worth and has withstood the test of time. Whether they’re at the bottom of the deep blue sea or growing where the sun shines, algae can adapt, regenerate, protect itself and reproduce, no matter the environment. Algae is a great ally that has earned its spot in our makeup kits!

Moisturizing and
revitalizing properties

Employed to make cosmetic products smooth and creamier, certain algae extracts moisturize and revitalize the skin while helping the epidermis repair itself. The minerals, enzymes, vitamins and fatty acids in algae can also provide a much needed boost to dull complexions.

A source of antioxidants

Rich in powerful antioxidants, marine plants help fight free radicals, which can be responsible for visible signs of aging. Algae can help the skin remain supple and firm while reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the face.

Some freshwater algae, with their composition that resembles collagen, stimulates cellular regeneration in the skin. That’s why algae can be a great anti-aging ingredient.

Protection from the sun

Even more surprising, some algae contain photoprotective molecules that act as solar filters (UVA and UVB). Recently, the cosmetics industry has shown an increasing interest in these natural barriers that can potentially replace chemical filters in various sunscreen products. This could reduce the number of allergic reactions to certain products.

Be careful! Products with algae extract should not in any way replace your sunscreen.
