Shingles is caused by the reactivation of the chickenpox virus. One in three people will have an episode of shingles in their lifetime. Shingles affects mostly the elderly (50 years or older) and people with weakened immune systems.
Vaccination provides the best protection against shingles and its complications. The vaccine is recommended for people aged 50 years and older and for immunocompromised people aged 18 years and older. Additionally, individuals aged 18 and older who live with certain chronic conditions that increase their risk, such as asthma, arthritis, lupus, diabetes, or lung or intestinal disease, can get vaccinated to protect themselves. It is possible to receive this vaccine directly at the pharmacy.
For Quebec patients: People aged 75 and over as well as immunocompromised people aged 18 and over can get vaccinated against shingles free of charge.
