Waterproof or not?

Some devices are rain and splash resistant. Others are referred to in the lingo of the field as "tropicalized", i.e. guaranteed fungus resistant and fully waterproof. Make sure however to check whether or not your lenses are as waterproof as your body—as not all makes offer this protection.

Waterproof or not?

Beat the rain

Using an umbrella as protection isn’t the greatest idea. You’ll have your hands full holding the umbrella as you struggle to take a couple shots. Plus, the slightest gust of wind can splash water on your camera… Avoid continuously wearing it around your neck. Take it out only when you’re ready to snap a shot and keep it in your bag when you’re not using it.

A good bag

From rain covers to waterproof bags; there are a wide range of more or less expensive solutions to protect your equipment. Before you buy a rain cover, make sure it fits your particular model and adequately covers the body, lenses and even flash, as the case may be. If you choose to go for a bag, regularly apply water repellent coating and put small moisture-absorbent pouches inside.

DIY protection

Are you good with your hands? Make your own protection using a Ziploc bag and rubber band. Make a hole in the bag big enough to fit your lense through and use the rubber band to hold the bag in place. Cover your lenses with plastic film and use a UV filter to protect them from the rain without distorting colours.

Handle with care

It’s best to take shelter when changing lenses or memory cards. Or you can always do so inside a large clear plastic bag. Avoid manipulating equipment inside your wind-breaker, as condensation may occur on your lens glass.
