Before you get started

Any family event or generation can be the inspiration for your photo album. Before delving into the production process, don’t forget that the key to success for such a project lies in the photo, document and family story research. Before you start working on the book, organize your research using photo-publishing software like Jean Coutu’s. It’ll make your life easier once you get in front of your computer.

To scan or not to scan…your archival documents

Marriage licenses, historical photos, old documents…don’t keep these treasures to yourself! Make sure that your scans have a minimum pixel resolution of 1200x1560 so that you can use them in Jean Coutu’s photo publishing software.

The family tree

A family tree photo album isn’t complete without an actual family tree! Display your family tree on the album’s cover page or even within the album itself. Check out how below:

  • If you’re good with Photoshop, Illustrator or even Word, you can put photos of your loved ones in portrait format (or wallet-size) on a picture of a tree, position them according to their relationship to the family, and then save the image to add to your album.
  • If that’s not your style, you can develop your photos in portrait format and choose a larger picture of a tree. Arrange your photos on the tree, place it on a table and take an aerial photo of your work. Try to avoid any glare.

Putting it all together

The most common way to organize a project like this would be to start with the oldest generation and end with their youngest descendants. The challenge here lies in making the photos, their details and the documents you want to showcase all line up. For example, it might be interesting to display a full-page photo of one of your ancestors on one page and on the next a copy of their birth certificate or marriage license. Note that photo-editing software allows you to display up to 12 images per page, depending on your setup. Use this to your advantage and display a photo of one of your family members next to a photo of the place where they once lived. You can even create a mosaic by grouping together six photos of the same person throughout their life.
