Maintaining a healthy sexuality

Sexual health is a key component to a person’s general health. Be sure to take care of it for your well-being.

Sexual dysfunction

As a way of expression and entering into a relationship, sexuality can be a source of pleasure, contentment, and sometimes, even fascination. Some people strive for a healthy and satisfying intimate life, but experience difficulties that prevent them from fully achieving this goal. When sexuality causes discomfort, embarrassment, or concern, people too often choose not to discuss the subject with their partner or a healthcare professional.

Sexual dysfunction or sexual disorder is a difficulty experienced during a certain stage of sexual activity, (desire, arousal, coitus or reaching an orgasm). Common examples include premature ejaculation, erectile dysfunction, vaginal dryness, and pain during penetration. Sexual dysfunction sometimes stems from a physical problem (illness, disability, medication, etc.), while in others, it results from a psychological disorder (trauma, stress or anxiety, fear, feelings of guilt, etc.).

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)

When you have intercourse, your partner may not be the only living thing you come into contact with. Certain infections caused by viruses, bacteria, fungus, and parasites can be contracted during intimate contact. Chlamydia, gonorrhea, genital herpes, and infections caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV), or by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are some well-known examples of STIs.

Too often, the risk of contracting an STI during sexual intercourse is underestimated, and we forget to use adequate protection. It is important that everyone be well-informed and adopt healthy and safe sexual behaviours in order to prevent sexually transmitted infections.

To avoid contracting or transmitting an STI, one must be careful. Prevention is always the best option.
