Three terrifyingly simple craft ideas for Halloween!

Want to transform your home for Halloween? Here are a few easy decoration ideas you can make with stuff you’ve probably already got at home. Get out your scissors, felt pens and candies: it’s time for some crafting fun for the whole family!

1. Hanging ghosts

Les fantômes à suspendre

What you’ll need

  • Facial tissues
  • Cotton balls (makeup remover balls) or balls of recycled paper
  • String or wool
  • Scissors
  • Permanent marker

How to…

  • Lay two sheets of facial tissue on a table, one on top of the other with the corners apart*, and place the paper ball in the centre.

*The alignment doesn’t have to be perfect.

  • Fold the tissues around the ball, then tie the string or wool, enclosing the ball, to form the ghost's head. Leave an extra length of string for hanging.
  • Use the marker to draw on a ghostly face.
  • Repeat until you get as many ghosts as you want.

Then hang the ghosts in a scary place!

2. Cardboard creatures

Les créatures de carton

What you’ll need

  • Cardboard paper towel or toilet paper roll
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Craft paper
  • Paint
  • Felt pens
  • Your choice of accessories: eyes, pompons, etc.

How to…

Provide one cardboard roll (or several!) per person and place all the material on a table. Everyone gets to create their own creature. Here are a few ideas to inspire you: a black cat with pipe cleaner whiskers, a bat with paper wings, a green monster with multiple eyes...

*If you’re going to paint the rolls, apply a few coats in advance. You’ll want the roll to be dry by the time you use it. (Acrylic paint gives an even opaque finish faster, but any type of paint will work!)

3. Pennant garland

La guirlande de fanions

What you’ll need

  • Orange and black craft paper
  • Stiff cardboard paper
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Felt pen
  • String or wool
  • Adhesive tape
  • Your choice of decorative elements

How to…

  1. Create the “template” for your flags. Draw a rectangle on the stiff cardboard (aim for a width of about 15 cm and a length of 45 cm), then draw lines between the opposite corners to form an X in the centre. Cut out the triangle formed at the top of the X.
  2. Use the template to draw triangles on the cardboard.
  3. Cut out each triangle and decorate it on one side with designs, letters, glued shapes, etc.

Glue the backs of the pennants to the string with a small piece of duct tape to complete the garland and you’re good to go!

Don’t have everything on the list?

No worries! You can adapt the instructions using the material you have on hand. The important thing is to be creative and most of all, to have fun!
