There are several factors that can affect the health of your skin. A poor diet, fatigue, stress and pollution can all wreak havoc on your complexion. Luckily, cosmetics created for your particular skin type as well as a specific beauty regimen can help you battle and eliminate these aggressors.
Define your skin type
First and foremost, you must determine your skin type. You can then determine which category of products would work best for you. Still unsure? Visit your nearest Jean Coutu and speak to a cosmetologist. She will be able to recommend the best products for you.
You have normal skin if your face is neither dry nor oily. In this case, use products that are labelled normal to combination skin.
You have dry skin if it has a tendency to peel or flake. You should choose products that are rich and hydrating.
You have combination skin si la zone T (nez, menton et front) brille, mais que la peau des joues reste sèche. Choisissez des produits destinés aux peaux mixtes.
Vous avez la peau grasse if your T-zone (nose, chin and forehead) are oily but your cheeks remain dry. Choose products that are indicated for combination skin.
You have oily skin if your T-zone as well as your cheeks shine. If this is you, choose products that are oil free and labelled for oily skin types.
Targeted treatments: morning, day and night
Morning: Time of the day to clean skin and rid yourself of any build up or imperfections that may have occurred overnight. Use a cleansing gel lotion or mousse if you have mixed or oily skin and a cream cleanser if you have dry skin. For a fresh start to the day, use a toner before applying your moisturizer and eye cream.
For mornings when you’re in a hurry: Use a cleanser that simultaneously cleans and tones.
During the day: You may need to freshen up if you live in an area with pollution or if you have oily or mixed skin. You can purchase cleansing toilettes which are a snap to use, and will quickly eliminate build up. These can be used at any time of day for an instant boost. Your skin will glow, but don’t forget to touch up your makeup. For those with dry skin, you can apply moisturizer midway through the day. Never neglect to hydrate skin that is flaking or itchy.
Before bed: Removing your makeup is a must. We cannot stress this enough. Remove all traces of makeup using a makeup remover, then gently dab your face with a toner to balance the pH of your skin. Afterwards, apply your night cream and eye cream.
Pro tip: Use a makeup remover specifically designated for use around the eyes. There are also 3-in-1 products which remove makeup, tone skin and are gentle enough for the eye area. A favourite product guaranteed!
