Slugging: a great way to deeply moisturize your skin

With cold weather comes indoor heating, which can dry out the skin of your face. To help deal with the problem, we’ve got a great new trend from Korea that’s all the rage on social networks: slugging.

What exactly is slugging?

This hot new beauty trend is exploding on TikTok and no wonder: it moisturizes the skin on your face overnight using one simple, versatile ingredient: petroleum jelly.

How? Well, when you apply petroleum jelly on top of your night cream or other skincare product (whatever suits your skin type best), it creates a barrier that protects your skin, sealing in the moisture your skin needs. Petroleum jelly also nourishes your face with vitamin A and vitamin E, while giving you plump, glowing skin in the morning. Psst! Slugging is also great for people with facial eczema because the petroleum jelly helps retain much needed moisture.

How to succeed at slugging

The technique is simple:

  1. Cleanse your face completely to remove makeup, dirt and impurities.
  2. Exfoliate to remove all dead skin.
  3. Apply a serum and a night cream that suit your skin type.
  4. Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly (which prevents moisture from evaporating) over your entire face.
  5. Leave both products on your skin overnight and remove in the morning by washing well.

Quick tip:

Hyaluronic acid-based serums are great for slugging because they moisturize your skin gently and deeply.

Before you try slugging…

Heads up: slugging isn’t the miracle cure that TikTok would have you believe. True, many people get added hydration and a more radiant glow to their faces, but that’s not the case for everyone. Slugging helps regenerate dry skin, so it’s not suited for people with combination or oily skin, because the petroleum jelly is simply too rich and can even aggravate skin problems by making the skin too oily and the pores more noticeable. Another important note: petroleum jelly locks in moisture, but it’s also doing the same thing to the dirt and bacteria that can build up on your skin. So, it’s still essential that you clean your face thoroughly before slugging to avoid clogging your pores.
