Retro makeup gets an update

You have to use the right products if you want to do 1950s and 60s-inspired makeup. Cat eyes, voluminous lashes, nude lips, glowing complexion and doll’s cheeks: here’s how to get a retro look that will make you beautiful and trendy.

The Audrey Hepburn cat eye

Whether you call it a cat or doe eye, the technique is the same to get 50s and 60s-inspired eye makeup like Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot used to wear. Here’s how to do it: start by applying an eyelid base to prolong the makeup’s hold. If you don’t have any on hand, beige powder will do. Then, trace a line with black eyeliner from the root of the upper eyelid’s lashes, starting at inner eye and tracing the line to the other end. If you have a hard time drawing a nice line in one sweep, start by tracing half and then draw the second part, ending in a comma at the eye’s corner. To make it easier, use Maybelline’s Master Kajal liquid liner in Onyx Rush. The cone-shaped, pointed applicator glides easily and precisely along the eyelid.

Twiggy-style lashes and lips

British triple threat Twiggy is responsible for the super-long-lashes-and-nude-lips look. Launched in the 60s, XXL lashes adorned upper and lower eyelids alike, which made eyes appear much bigger. To get the same effect, you can use an eyelash curler followed by L’Oréal’s Voluminous Miss Manga mascara that thickens both top and bottom lashes, giving them mega volume.

For your lips, Personnelle’s Red Distinction in Glory—exclusively at Jean Coutu—offers a nice, matte finish even though it’s enriched with fennel seed and coconut oil so as not to dry out your lips. If you want your lips to sparkle, cover your lipstick with Lise Watier’s Sparkle of Hope gloss. The tube even has a mirror and small light!

Glowing skin and doll’s cheeks

With a single product, like Jouviance’s Complexion-enhancing Duo, you can get a glowing complexion and impeccable look by combining the two shades. You can also focus on the dark shade to evenly bronze skin and the pink one to bring out your cheeks. This compact, featured in shades Tenderness and Passion (our photo), contain hydrating ingredients that get you a matte and velvety finish. (Ajouter visuel Jouviance #670546 Boutique en ligne)
