Manicures: fast forward to fall-winter trends

The leaves change colour in the fall; so should our nails! Here's a peek at what the coming season holds for our fingertips.

Seasonal Colours

Rich shades inspired by nature take their place on the tips of our fingers. Mustard yellows, oranges and reds mimic autumn's blaze, while grays and dark blues—that go with everything—take our nails into the deepest shadows of evening.

Advice: Even the tiniest chip seems large on dark nail polish. To protect your manicure and prolong its life, apply a new topcoat every two or three days.

Metallic Finish

Shades of gold, silver and metallic gray are all the rage for the coming months. Shimmering or matte, they give our manicure the shine of subtle jewels. For a twist on the autumn trend, why not take that monochrome look you see on the runways and make it your own? Simply apply a different shade of the same colour on each nail, from lightest to darkest.

Advice: To make the most of the monochrome look, choose five warm shades and five cold ones. It's the easiest way to avoid clashing colours.

Black & White

Grays and black work well with anything in your wardrobe this fall. Light gray offers a classic manicure look, but not too sedate; while black gives your nails a touch of chic or rock, depending on the outfit. Why not blend the two together by making your ring finger gray while all your other nails are black? Then switch it up on the other hand.

Advice: In a hurry? To help your nail polish dry more quickly, it's better to apply two or even three very thin coats than one thick one, which will take forever to dry and be more prone to chipping.

What about shape?

Oval nails have been in fashion for a few seasons now. Their elegant shape is ideal for medium-length nails. Simply file your nail to create roughly a 45º angle towards the centre, then round out the corners. If you like long nails, you should try the pointy, or stiletto shape popular with many stars. These styles are hard to pull off on your own so you might want to see a pro for a perfect manicure. After that, you can simply follow the shape yourself at home.
