Makeup: 5 mega trends for fall/winter 2018-2019

Glitter, eyes that pop, light-filled touches, glossy lips… the coming season promises a twisted take on some old faves. So go on, have some fun!

Dare to be glitterful

Runways: Giambattista Valli, Maison Margiela

Summer has been ablaze with illuminators and pearly powders but this fall is going to be truly glitterful thanks to is ultra-shimmery, ultra-personal touches with glitter that just won’t quit!

How to achieve the look…

Sparingly? Forget it! Soak up the glitter with your brush then spread it generously on your lips, your eyelids or your cheeks. But to ensure proper balance, make sure you only apply it to a single area (unless you’re going all out for a special evening!). And when greater discretion is called for, opt for natural skin tones and subtle accents.

Pro tip

To make sure the glitter has the staying power you want (and doesn’t spread to unwanted areas), apply base makeup before the glitter and a setting product afterwards.

The classic carmine

Runway: McQueen

This season features the comeback of an absolute classic: vivaciously vibrant carmine-red lips, the perfect incarnation of French elegance.

How to achieve the look…

Lipstick is the focal point of minimalist makeup. Black eyeliner, mascara, translucent foundation: pay special when applying each one. For a clean, sharp look, take the time to outline the lips with a well-sharpened lip-liner then spread the lipstick with a brush starting from the centre, moving outwards. If you’re going for that slightly imperfect look, apply your lipstick straight from the tube then use a brush to correct any glaring flaws.

Pro tip

The key to a perfectly pouty pucker? Taking proper care of your lips. Make sure you exfoliate regularly with a facial-care product or, even better, with a formula specifically designed for your lips. Then treat them to some deep nourishment with a rich balm. If you’re applying the balm just before the lipstick, make sure you remove the excess with some facial tissue to ensure better hold.

The illuminated eye

Runways: Fendi, Versace, Tommy Hilfiger

As the temperatures start to fall and the days get shorter, it’s time to give our eyes a little wake-up call. This season’s solution? A touch of white eye shadow in the inner corner of the eye. Your choice: matte or iridescent. Either way, all eyes will be on yours!

How to achieve the look…

Nothing could be easier: just use a small brush or the pointed end of a sponge to apply the eye shadow, then blur it in slightly. Finish your facial refresh by adding a touch of pink to your lips. Then add a little illuminator to your cheekbones and the upper edges of your mouth.

Pro tip

Worried that the white will make your dark spots stand out or accentuate your pale complexion? You needn’t be. Just enhance the eye shadow with a touch of gold mascara.

The pop palette

The last few years have given pop colours a touch of class, and these acidic neon shades now enjoy a special place on our eyes, our lips and even our cheekbones. This fall, go for some unexpected colour combos: bright pink and ultraviolet, electric orange and soft green.

How to achieve the look…

Contrasts are always a safe bet, like pale/dark or warm/cold. Use them to create gradients on your eyelids or to contrast your eyes with your lips. Not super comfortable with mismatched shades? No worries. Try a variation on the monochromatic theme by using complementary colours on your lips and eyelids.

Pro tip

If you’re thinking that pop colours aren’t exactly office-friendly, think again! There are several ways to rock the trend without rocking the boat: double up on your dark liner to create a flashy line; use a vibrant hue on your lips, like fuchsia, orange-red or candy-pink; or make your eyes pop by framing them with fluorescent eyelashes.

Sorbet gloss

Runways: Moschino, Miu Miu, Emilio Pucci, Oscar de la Renta

A must-have look from the fall/winter shows: shimmering lips with that "just bitten" effect. They’re a great way to keep your lips looking summer fresh.

How to achieve the look

Go for softer, subtler colours that tend towards pastels, like peach or rose. Pay close attention to the texture, too, using glossy finishes that mimic the lustrous effect of vinyl.

Pro tip

If that style’s a little too tame for you, why not go for oversized cat’s eyes, either hyper defined or a little blurred. It’s the perfect way to achieve that neo-grunge look!
