Plane trips: what to do when your skin gets a bad dose of altitude sickness

Dry skin, puffy eyes, chapped lips... plane trips can be rough on your face. Here are some tips to help you out next time you fly.

READY FOR TAKEOFF?

In an airplane, the relative humidity is about 20% or even less. That's way outside your comfort zone, which is more like 50%. As a result, dry skin becomes even drier and oily skin becomes oilier because the lack of humidity stimulates the sebaceous glands.

You know the old saying, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. So, before you get on the plane, exfoliate your skin from head to toe, then use a moisturizing mask on your face and apply a rich moisturizing cream on the rest of your body.

During the flight

Once in the air, make sure you keep a balanced diet. First, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the flight and opting for fruit and vegetables, which gradually release water as you digest them. Needless to say, you should avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks due to their dehydrating effect. The same goes for fatty, sugary and salty foods.

At the slightest hint of dehydration, promptly apply soothing balm to your lips, spritz on water from a mist bottle or use a moisturizing face cream. A word of warning: never touch your face without washing your hands first. And since industrial soaps and antibacterial gels will dry out your skin, it’s essential that you include a good hand cream in your beauty arsenal. For a quick boost of hydration, carry a thermal water mist with you. As soon as you feel your skin tightening, just use a couple of quick bursts of mist to quench your skin's thirst.

Those with oily skin should also consider adding a bottle of micellar water suited to their skin type to their dehydration survival kit, in case oil blotting sheets alone are not enough to mattify the T-zone.

Don’t forget that if your micellar water comes in a bottle that holds more than 100 ml (the maximum quantity allowed on board), you’ll need to transfer some into small plastic travel containers so that it doesn’t get confiscated when you pass through security.

A new beauty trend that’s ideal for flying is face mask sheets, which are available for all types of skin. Give them a try—as long as you don’t mind scaring the person sitting next to you!

Since it’s hard to sleep comfortably on a plane, many travellers choose to read or have their own personal movie marathon. That’s when eye drops come in handy—say goodbye to redness and dryness! Combine them with an eye contour treatment like an under-eye smoothing patch.

Things to avoid on board

Let your skin breathe! When you fly, it’s a good idea to avoid makeup of any kind, but especially foundation and mascara. If you don’t feel comfortable going out in public with your face completely bare, apply a BB cream before disembarking.

Have a good trip!
