Making the most of focussed concealing

If you’re not a fan of foundation but you want to hide an embarrassing blemish or soften a specific area, we’ve got just the tip for you:  focused concealing. Grab your brushes, and let’s go!

WHAT IS IT?

Perfected by beauty expert Matthew Waitesmith, focused concealing is about the finer details. Rather than spreading a specific product over a large area, as you would with contouring or strobing, focused concealing works by concentrating on tiny areas to hide imperfections or highlight specific areas. The result is a uniform and luminous complexion that looks natural and more convincing than the effect you get with larger quantities of colour.

On nettoie le visage en profondeur.

Because this technique uses a minimal amount of makeup, its highly popular among those who practice skinification—THE biggest trend of 2020-2021—which is all about keeping your skin as natural as possible and focussing on treatments rather than colours to help your skin looking its best.

HOW DO YOU ACHIEVE IT?

Want to conceal a few imperfections? Start by identifying them. Here are a few of the usual targets:

  • redness on the sides of your nose;
  • fine lines at the corners of your mouth;
  • shadows on your brow bone or around your eyes;
  • small pimples and dark spots on your cheeks, chin or forehead.

Put a drop of liquid corrector onto the target area then blend them in. It’s that simple!

Want to highlight certain areas?

If your goal is to work on specific features, the method remains the same. The only difference is where you apply the concealer to achieve the desired effect. You could, for example...

  • Adjust the proportions of your eyes. A light spot on the inner corners makes them look further apart, while a darker shade on the outer corners makes them look wider.
  • Make your lips look fuller. Place two drops of concealer on your lower lip, and one in the middle of your upper lip, then blend them in before applying your lipstick.
  • Give your makeup a boost. A touch of concealer can accentuate the contrast around black eyeliner, under-worked brows or above coloured lips.

The three golden rules of focused concealing:

  1. Use a synthetic brush with a flat tip, small enough to ensure control and precision, yet soft enough to blend without leaving a trace.
  2. Choose a concealer that blends in perfectly with your complexion so you don’t draw attention to the concealed areas.
  3. Seal the makeup with a cloud of translucent, extra-fine loose powder.
