Dental-care products: green solutions for a bright smile!

Our dental care is going green! Here’s how to maintain impeccable teeth without harming the planet.

Green brushing

Your parents said it over and over: healthy teeth are well-brushed teeth. Careful cleaning removes bacteria and plaque, which cause cavities and gum disease. Ideally, you should brush after every meal: those unwanted guests get to work right away! If you don’t have time to brush after every meal, take at least two or three minutes before bedtime to clean your teeth thoroughly (but don’t brush too hard!) in a circular motion from top to end. Be sure to brush your tongue, too.

On average, we replace our toothbrushes every three months. 4.9 billion plastic brushes are discarded each year as a result. One solution to this problem is to get a toothbrush with a reusable handle and replaceable heads. Another option is to use a moso bamboo brush. Compostable and 100% biodegradable, it cleans just as efficiently and requires the same maintenance as a plastic brush: simply let it air dry and store it in an open toothbrush holder. Use it with toothpaste containing herbs or natural essences.

Why moso bamboo? This variety isn’t eaten by pandas and can grow four feet per day, making it a quickly renewable resource. It’s also grown without chemicals and is great at absorbing CO2. An ecological winner!

Green formulas and white teeth!

Which toothpaste should you use? You’ve got lots of choice! There are more and more fluoride-free toothpastes with mint or tea tree oils appearing on store shelves. How refreshing!

  • Activated charcoal: this compound made from bone, peat, charcoal, olives or sawdust isn’t just the king of facemasks (or water filtration systems). A powerful “impurity magnet,” it can also rid teeth of small food particles and unwanted stains, making them immaculate. Be sure not to overdo it, however! Its abrasive effect can damage enamel, increasing tooth sensitivity and vulnerability to cavities. Brushing with it a few times per month is enough.
  • Coconut oil: its anti-bacterial action helps slow down the appearance of plaque, prevents gingivitis and whitens your teeth… all without damaging the enamel, making it ideal for daily use!

Although a toothbrush is essential, it doesn’t reach one third of the tooth’s surface. That’s why you shouldn’t neglect flossing, which gets into the narrowest of spaces! Every day, before you brush, take time to floss both sides of every tooth, from the base to the top. This is essential for preventing plaque from hardening and forming tartar.
