Apply one patch every 24 hours to a non-hairy clean dry area of your front or back above the waist or to the upper outer area of your arm. Remove used patch before applying new patch. A fresh skin site should be used each day. Use immediately after removal from pouch and do not store after pouch has been opened. 10-week program: If you smoke fewer than 10 cigarettes a day, weigh less than 100 pounds (45 kilograms), or have heart disease and your doctor recommended Nicoderm, your 10-week program will start with step 2. Begin with step 2 (14 mg) for the first 6 weeks. Then move to step 3 (7 mg) for weeks 7 through 8. If you still feel the need to use Nicoderm, continue with step 3 for two more weeks (weeks 9 and 10). This prepares you to stop using Nicoderm altogether at the end of week 10. If you smoke more than 10 cigarettes a day, you will need to use the following 3-step program. Begin with step 1 (21 mg) for the first 6 weeks. Move to step 2 (14 mg) for weeks 7 and 8. Then move to step 3 (7 mg) for weeks 9 through 10. This prepares you to stop using Nicoderm altogether at the end of week 10. How to apply Nicoderm Patch: 1. Do not remove the Nicoderm patch from its sealed protective pouch until you are ready to use it. Nicoderm patches will lose nicotine to the air if you store them out of the pouch. Use scissors to cut the protective pouch on the dotted line. 2. Choose a non-hairy clean dry area of your front or back above the waist or the upper outer area of your arm. Do not put Nicoderm patches on skin that is burned, broken out, cut, or irritated in any way. Make sure your skin is free of lotion and soap before applying a patch. 3. A clear protective liner covers the sticky side of the Nicoderm patch which is the side that you will put on your skin. The liner has a slit down the middle to help you remove it from the patch. With the sticky side facing, you pull one half of the liner away from the Nicoderm patch starting at the middle slit. Hold the Nicoderm patch at one of the outside edges (touch the sticky side as little as possible) and pull off the other half of the protective liner. Throw away this liner. 4. Immediately apply the sticky side of the Nicoderm patch to your skin. Press the patch firmly on your skin with the heel of your hand for at least 10 seconds. Make sure it sticks well to your skin, especially around the edges. 5. Rinse your hands with water when you have finished applying the Nicoderm patch. Do not use soap as it may increase the absorption of nicotine by your skin. Nicotine on your hands could get into your eyes and nose and cause stinging redness or more serious problems. 6. After 24 hours, remove the Nicoderm patch you have been wearing. Choose a different place on your skin to apply the next patch and repeat steps 1 to 5. Do not return to a previously used skin site for at least one week. Do not leave the patch on for more than 24 hours as it may irritate your skin and because it loses strength after 24 hours. When to apply the patch: Applying the Nicoderm patch at about the same time each day (first thing in the morning for example) will help you to remember when to put on a new patch. If you want to change the time when you put on your patch, you can do so. At the new time, just remove the Nicoderm patch you are wearing and put on a new one. After that, apply the Nicoderm patch at the new time each day. What happens if the patch becomes wet? Water will not harm the Nicoderm patch you are wearing. You can bathe, shower, swim, or use a hot tub for short periods while you are wearing the Nicoderm patch. What happens if the patch comes off during wearing? Nicoderm patches generally stick well to most people's skin. However, if your patch falls off, put on a new one making sure you select a non-hairy non-irritated area of skin that is clean and dry. Remove the Nicoderm patch at your regular time to keep your schedule the same or 24 hours after applying the replacement patch if you wish to change the time each day that you apply a new patch. If the soap you use has lanolin or moisturizers, the patch may not stick well. Using a different soap may help. Body creams lotions and sunscreens can also cause problems with keeping on your patch. Do not apply creams or lotions to the place on your skin where you will put the patch. If your skin is oily or if you have trouble getting the patch to stick, try cleaning your skin with rubbing alcohol first. If you have followed the directions and the patch still does not stick to you, try using medical adhesive tape over the patch. Disposing of the patch: Fold the used Nicoderm patch in half with the sticky sides together. After you put on a new Nicoderm patch, take the opened pouch from the new patch and place the used folded Nicoderm patch inside it. Throw the pouch in the trash away from children. Even used patches have enough nicotine to poison children and pets. Wash your hands with water (do not use soap).
