Showcase your photos on a wall

Nothing should be left to chance when it comes time to decorate your walls. Here are some tips to make your photos the highlight of your home.

The common thread

If you’ve decided to group several frames together on a wall, find the common thread between your photos. It could be a particular theme to create repetition, e.g. what you photographed the most during your trips (Moroccan doors, seashells, smiles!). You could also choose a unique frame for each of your photos or same-colour mats for each one.

The common thread

The right height

We often tend to hang frames too high up on the wall. Hang your photo up at eye-level, which is typically 65 inches above the floor. This measurement can serve as the focal point if you’re hanging several frames. Hang your pictures a little lower if your wall collage faces a sofa or the dining room table. If you’re hanging them above a piece of furniture, leave at least 10 inches of clearing between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the frame.

Suitable proportions

Make sure that the frames are evenly spaced. If not, the group of frames could look off balance, and visually unappealing. Measure everything to check that the frames are well centred on the wall or part of the wall that you’re decorating. Lastly, use a level to ensure that the frames are straight.

Also, take into account the size of the room that will house your works of art. It’s best not to hang a small frame on a large wall, as it will look swallowed up by the rest of the room. Opt for a frame that’s proportional to the size of the wall, or group several small frames together on one portion of the wall.

Put some order in your pictures

Break with monotony by choosing frames of different sizes. Select your favourite photo as the focal point of your wall collage. Once this photo is in place, you’ll be able to hang up the other frames. The easiest way is to arrange them in a shape, like a square or circle.

Know your optical illusions

Use optical illusions to better the room! Aligning the frames horizontally will make your room look bigger. Inversely, aligning them vertically will give the room added height.

Secure the frames to the wall

Ask someone to hold the frame before and while you secure it to the wall. This way it’ll be easier for you to determine the required spacing. Insert the screws so they are pointing slightly downwards, in order for the wall rather than the screw to hold up the weight of the frame. If the operation is too delicate for your walls, or too risky for your fingers, you can prop your frames on a shelf or mantelpiece. If the image resolution permits, you could also get the photo blown up to the biggest size, place it in a custom frame, and prop it on the floor. The end result will be striking.

Shed some light

Put a spotlight on your photographs. Install a picture light above a large-size photo to highlight it. If you’re scattering your photos throughout the hall, install a light rail on the ceiling and direct the different spotlights onto your favourite frames.
