The benefits of thermal water

Moisturizers, masks, scrubs, lip balms, lotions, cleansing gels... thermal spring water is used in a wide variety of leading skin-care products and is also offered in pure formats, like sprays. Why is it so sought-after? And how is it used? Read on…

What is thermal water?

Thermal water is created by the slow movement of rainwater as it flows through the cracks in mountainous rock formations (often up to a 1,000 m deep) before bubbling back up to the surface. During its epic journey, the water becomes saturated with minerals and carbon dioxide. In simple terms, thermal water is underground mineral water that’s free from pollution and bacteria and offers beneficial properties. Pure and rich in mineral salts, gases and trace elements, this natural thermal spring water is recognized for its therapeutic properties, especially when it comes to the skin.

In addition to softening and smoothing your skin, thermal water helps your epidermis regenerate itself, reinforcing its protective layer and reducing inflammation, which makes it ideal for combatting wrinkles, redness and scars... and perfect for beauty care!

A thousand and one virtues

Ultra-gentle, featuring anti-inflammatory and softening properties, thermal water provides much needed moisture, so it benefits any type of skin. Not surprisingly, it’s particularly suited to sensitive skin, because it helps calm itching and irritation caused by external aggressions.

And, although thermal water has been used for millennia to treat arthritis, joint pain and burns, it’s also used to relieve certain skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, couperosis and rosacea. Plus, thanks to its purifying effects and antioxidants, thermal water is ideal for people with dry or dehydrated skin.

A thousand and one virtues

Thermal water skincare products aren’t just for adults! They can also be used to moisturize the delicate skin of children in winter, or to reduce the painful inflammation caused by diaper rash.

Thermal-water care products, ideal at any age!

Thermal water is great for moisturizing children's delicate skin in winter, or to help soothe the painful inflammation caused by diaper rash in toddlers.

Grab your spray bottles! There are lots of great reasons to make thermal-water sprays an integral part of your beauty kit—and to keep a travel-size bottle of it handy at all times.

  • For added moisture. A few quick spritzes after you wash, morning and night, helps clean your skin more effectively while adding an extra layer of protective moisture.
  • For makeup application. Soak your foundation sponge in thermal water and it will absorb less makeup, while making the foundation easier to apply and boosting the foundation’s ability to moisturize your skin. The mist can also be used to help fix your look by adding extra hold to your makeup as it evaporates.
  • For soothing your skin. Thermal-water spray helps soothe irritated skin after an allergic reaction, a sunburn, or a particularly intense waxing.
  • For instant refreshment after engaging in sports or on a hot day (or night), thermal water is a great way to refresh and rebalance your skin. Just spritz some onto your face or body and say “Ahhh!”

If you want more targeted action, try folding a bathroom tissue in half and then soaking it in thermal water before placing it on the affected areas. Leave it on for about ten minutes, ensuring it stays amply wet.

How to best enjoy the benefits…

Great news: you don't have to go to a spa to get the benefits of thermal water. Most quality stores offer moisturizing creams, masks, scrubs, lip balms, lotions and cleansers that feature thermal water to help soothe, moisturize and revitalize your skin right in your own home.

And, because these products are ideal for sensitive and fragile skin, you’ll notice an improvement in your own skin no matter what type you have, because thermal water helps soothe and reduce inflammation by deeply moisturizing your epidermal layer.

Are all thermal waters alike?

The quick answer is no! Every thermal water comes from a different source, flowing through different types of soil, so the composition and quantity of minerals they contain also differs. Each one has its own specific properties to satisfy different types of needs.

  • Avène thermal water is lightly mineralized, so it helps relieve rashes gently and helps your skin heal itself.
  • La Roche-Posay water is rich in silica, covering your epidermis with a velvety, protective film that coats your skin, while its antioxidant properties add vitality to your skin cells, slowing down the aging process.
  • Uriage water is the most highly concentrated, with 1g of minerals per litre.
Because its mineral composition resembles that of your skin, it helps rebalance and rehydrate your skin quickly and effectively.
  • Vichy water is great for tightening your pores and strengthening and soothing your epidermal layer, making it an ideal choice for boosting radiance!
