No poo, co-wash or cleansing conditioner: a short guide

You’ve probably heard of the no poo (“without shampoo”) or co-wash (“washing with conditioner”) trends. But what are they exactly? And what are their advantages? Overview and product must-haves.

What is no poo?

The no poo movement is based on the principle that shampoo is a relatively recent phenomenon (the product was only introduced in the market in the last century) so it shouldn’t be necessary to use it to wash your hair several times a week, as most people do. Adepts of no poo even agree that washing your hair too often strips it of the natural oils produced by the scalp, essential for healthy hair.

The idea then is to put the shampoo aside and use a gentler product to wash your hair less frequently. The alternatives suggested: water, baking soda, apple cider vinegar or a cleansing conditioner designed specifically for this purpose. Choosing the latter option is called co-wash.

The benefits of a cleansing conditioner

Using ordinary shampoos less frequently avoids exposing your hair to the chemical ingredients contained in these products. Here are the main advantages of using a cleansing conditioner:

  • Hair is better hydrated, revitalized and shinier
  • Their formulas usually contain fewer substances that are non-biodegradable, which makes them a greener option
  • Your hair tends to be easier to style: in general, your hair will hold a style better when it is not freshly washed
  • They are less harmful to dyed hair than regular shampoos
  • By using a single product, you save time (as well as water and money!)

A practice that requires a gradual approach

If you dive head first into co-wash, you might believe you’re hair isn’t truly clean, even if in reality it is. Adopting the technique in a gradual manner can help your hair get used to this method and avoid the sensation of greasy hair. Give your hair time to adjust to your new routine!
