Give your makeup kit a spring clean

Spring is back, which means it’s time for a spring clean—including your makeup kit! Here are a few tips to know which products to keep and which to throw away.

You don’t have to completely overhaul your makeup kit—just make sure that none of your products are expired.

The easiest way is to look for the expiry date on the packaging; all products with an SPF rating have one. As well, most products have a small pictogram of a container along with a number and the letter “M” (for “month”). These indicate the product’s shelf-life: for example, “6M” means the product can be used for six months after it is opened.

If you’re unsure, it’s best to throw away a product if you notice the odour, colour or texture has changed.

Liquid mascara and eyeliner

As liquid mascaras and eyeliners are mainly composed of water, they are more susceptible to bacterial contamination. Keep only the most recent ones to prevent the risk of eye infections.

Foundation

In general, you should only hold on to foundations and other liquid products for a maximum of one year. If you have a skin reaction or notice any small pimples, that’s a sign it is time to replace your product.

Powder

Powder products, especially compact powders, eye shadows and blush, have a longer lifespan because they are dry. However, if you notice them beginning to crack, dry out, or if they don’t apply as well, then you should replace them.

Lipstick

Lipsticks can easily last a year. However, if the product is starting to dry out, it’s best to throw it away.

Accessories

Brushes and sponges are havens for bacteria, so it’s important to clean them often, ideally after each use. A spring clean is also a good occasion to throw away crumbling sponges and worn-out brushes.

Tips

  • With a permanent marker, write the date you begin using the product on its packaging so you’ll know when it expires.
  • Use disinfectant wipes or cotton dipped in alcohol to disinfect your makeup products. For brushes, try a brush cleanser by Personnelle Cosmetics or Lise Watier.
