How to care for sensitive skin

Be gentle

The first thing to keep in mind when you have sensitive skin is you need to be gentle. Fragile skin will quickly react to external aggressions so make sure you care for your skin with the right routine. Avoid aggressively cleaning it or harshly putting on and taking off your makeup. Opt for delicate, yet precise, actions by using your fingertips. To dry your skin (after you clean it or after your workout) delicately dab it instead of rubbing. Your skin will thank you.

Watch out for heat

Even though it can be a great way to relax, a hot bath can irritate your skin. In fact, the water’s heat can strip the skin of its natural protective oils, making it more likely to become irritated, produce red spots or become dehydrated. Opt for lukewarm showers and baths and then use a good moisturizer. Try to avoid abrupt or frequent temperature changes because that can cause your skin to react. No wonder indoor heating in the winter does so much damage to skin!

There’s nothing like the status quo

We love pampering ourselves with home spa treatments. Masks, scrubs and peels can make us feel revitalized and refreshed. But anyone with sensitive skin should refrain from going overboard. Stick to one or two treatments a month, instead of every week.

For every problem there is a solution

Are products that are geared for people with sensitive skin really necessary? Without a doubt! Sensitive skins need a simple, yet efficient routine. Whether you want to conceal wrinkles, acne, spots or any other issue, use products that have been tested on delicate skins. That way you’ll be sure your skin can tolerate the treatment you want to use. You can also opt for brands that are specialized in treating sensitive skin. A simple trip to your pharmacy will convince you that there are solutions for every problem… and budget!

When you find a solution, stick with it

If there’s one thing sensitive skins love, it’s routine. Because they have trouble adjusting to change, fragile skins love it when you stick with a product that works! Avoid changing your beauty routine from one day to the next. Want to try a new product? Gradually introduce it into your routine by using it every other day until you’re certain your skin won’t react negatively. After all, having sensitive skin doesn’t mean you can’t try out the latest innovative products!

Protect yourself from the sun

Do we really need to describe the effects the sun has on sensitive skin? Often delicate and pale, fragile skins can quickly develop sunburns, brown spots or red spots when exposed to the sun. Choose a mineral sunscreen with a high sun protection factor (SPF). Those with pale skin and hair will want to use SPF 60 and reapply every 2 hours.

Say goodbye to irritating ingredients

Some skin types react to certain ingredients more than others. Perfume is a good example, as are preservatives and active ingredients. Before buying a new product, take the time to read the label to find out what you’re about to put on your face. Or look for hypoallergenic products that are formulated without artificial fragrances. Natural perfumes for their part are much easier to tolerate. Even though you have sensitive skin, you don’t have to say goodbye to pleasant scents!
