Choosing the Right Makeup for Your Glasses

Good news for those who need eyewear: glasses have become a hot fashion accessory. That said, whether you’re near- or far-sighted, there’s no question that corrective lenses alter the appearance of your eyes, and the style of your frames also makes a difference. You should adjust your makeup accordingly. Here are some tricks to tackle the problem with makeup.

Near-sighted or far-sighted? Make up your eyes according to your lenses.

If you’re near-sighted, the concave lenses of your glasses will make your eyes appear smaller than they really are. That’s why it’s important to know how to make them really stand out. So forget about darker hues and favour instead neutral shades and eyeliners on the paler side.

If, on the other hand, you’re far- or long-sighted, your convex lenses will make your eyes appear unnaturally large. To “shrink” them, trace them with a dark liner. Also pay special attention to the skin around your eyes, especially if you have dark circles, wrinkles or puffiness. Don’t forget that some lenses can make imperfections look bigger, working much like a magnifying glass.

The style of your frames also makes a difference

Besides the lenses, the frames also play a role in your makeup choices.

If your glasses have thick black frames, then dare to be bold: go for dark lipsticks and charcoal eyes.

Do your glasses have coloured frames? Opt for shades that won’t clash with your eyewear, like chestnut, black or grey. Avoid overdoing your lipstick as well—you don’t want to steal the spotlight away from your glasses.

Finally, in the case of glasses with discreet frames, you have carte blanche to choose any makeup you like.

Did you know…?

  • Mascara is the perfect product when it comes to highlighting your eyes. Nonetheless, lashes may brush up against your lenses if you use a product that elongates them too much. To avoid such a snafu, use an eyelash curler before applying mascara or wear mascara that curls lashes like Lancôme’s Grandiose.
  • Impeccable brows that are properly drawn and perfectly freed from stray hairs make your eye area shine. To give them the definition they deserve, Personnelle Cosmetics’ Sourcils Précis Eyebrow Pencil is ideal. Don’t forget—make sure the frames of your glasses don’t hide your brows!
  • Glasses magnify the dark circles under your eyes. That’s why it’s essential to apply concealer. Try Gotcha Covered™ concealer by NYX Professional Make-Up and Elle R Cosmétiques’ Looky Brush. To create a radiant effect, you can even lighten the area all the way to the base of your nose.
  • Some lenses tend to flatten the appearance of your eyes. To restore a sense of depth, accentuate the hollows of the eyelids with a darker eyeshadow. We love Vamp! eyeshadow by Pupa Milano.
  • To emphasize your face’s balance and structure, consider highlighting your cheeks with some blush. Fit Me blush by Maybelline New York will produce the result you’re looking for.
